In future, Edmontonians should expect different precipitation patterns: wetter springs and winters, drier summers, and more frequent heavy rainfall events. While the temperature is expected to increase in all seasons, precipitation may increase in some seasons, but change very little in others. Along with rain events, we might also face an increase in drought conditions.
So what can we do about this changing precipitation to help better protect our homes?
- Landscaping: Stop water from getting in by sloping landscaping, eaves, and downspouts away from your home.
- Keep it dry: Install a backwater valve to protect your home from a sewer line back-up and make sure your sump pump is working.
- Keep it safe: For worst case scenarios, keep valuables in water proof containers and make sure that your insurance is up to date.
