Change for Climate is a climate change initiative from the City of Edmonton.
Here in Edmonton, we are used to extreme temperatures; we have been the coldest place on earth before, and we all know what -30oC feels like. We are even used to the occasional +30oC day in summer. But climate change is going to change all of this. Edmonton is going to get warmer on average, with more +30oC days in summer, and warmer, wetter winters.
So, how do you prepare your home for more summer days above 30°C and warmer winters with periods of extreme cold?
- Keep it cool: Instead of air conditioning, use cross-ventilation and fans to keep it cool. Add awnings and be sure to use window coverings.
- Insulation: Insulate your walls and attic, weather strip doors and seal windows to keep your home comfortable year-round.
- Get help: Programs like EnerGuide for homes make sure you’re doing the best, most cost effective retrofits for your house. Energy efficiency upgrades can help you to maintain comfortable temperatures in your home, year-round. If you aren’t handy, work with professionals to get the job done! (Also, check out our Home Energy Retrofit Accelerator (HERA) rebate program to help offset some of the cost of energy efficient upgrades.)
