In Edmonton, we are no stranger to extreme weather events; we have all experienced blizzards in the winter and hailstorms in the summer. But as temperatures rise and there is more energy in the atmosphere, these changing conditions can include high winds, fire, and smoky air that could lead to emergency situations.
So what can we do to stay safe as Edmonton’s weather gets more unpredictable?
- An airtight home: Improved weatherstripping helps to keep out smoke from wildfires. It also makes your home more energy efficient.
- The right siding: Consider fire resistant materials like stucco, cement board or brick.
- Emergency preparedness kit: A good emergency kit includes a radio, batteries, flashlight, first aid kit, non-perishable food, and drinking water, enough for 72 hours. Don't forget to prepare for your pets, too.
