June is when we celebrate all things environment, including Clean Air Day on Wednesday, June 2. Because the air quality in Edmonton is favourable most of the time, we tend not to think about the air very often.
Some of the more common pollutants that can contribute to poor air quality include vehicle exhaust; fine particles of dust picked up by strong winds; and fire smoke from grass fires, distant forest fires or even backyard fire pits.

If you want to learn more about how air quality may impact your health, the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) uses a scale from 1 to 10+. The lower the number, the lower the health risk. Edmonton’s LRT stations display current AQHI information.
The City also offers AirBeam Kits that provide more information about air contaminants. The kits are available to borrow from Edmonton Public Libraries.
With the warm days of summer approaching, it may be time to try out sustainable modes of transportation and discover how you can contribute to clean air. The Change for Climate Lunchbox Series on May 27, Change Mobility for Climate: Try Cycling, will offer some useful tips.
