Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. The City knows that environmental sustainability doesn’t have to come at the cost of restricting markets or limiting economic development. Many Edmonton-based businesses understand and value the three pillars of sustainability – people, planet and profit – and want to find balance in order to achieve economic success and profitability.
In order to help find that balance, the City of Edmonton encourages businesses to participate in the Building Energy Benchmarking Program.
Energy Use in Buildings
Edmonton commercial and residential buildings combined account for 42% of the energy consumed and 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions in our city. Addressing energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions in Edmonton’s large buildings is a critical component of our city’s transition to a low carbon, sustainable energy future. This demonstrates the essential role that Edmonton’s Building Energy Benchmarking Program plays in achieving Edmonton’s strategic objective to reduce energy use in buildings.

Register Your Building Today
Launched in 2017, Edmonton’s Building Energy Benchmarking Program lays the foundation for broader market transformation by providing energy performance information to building owners, managers, and other key stakeholders. The first municipally-led program of its kind in Canada, the program collects information about building energy performance across our city and supports Edmonton's transition to a low carbon, energy efficient future.
All Edmonton building owners and property managers are invited to participate. Registration is open to commercial, institutional and multi-family buildings over 20,000 sq ft. Program participants will:
- Receive one-on-one support for energy benchmarking and utility data access
- Be recognized as a leader in the annual City-hosted awards and recognition program
- Receive a customized building report and discover how energy efficient their building is compared to others
- Receive tailored recommendations for energy saving opportunities and access to a rebate (50% of the cost up to $10,000) to offset the costs of an energy audit
If you are interested, please register your building(s) by September 30, 2019.
So far, so good
Edmonton’s building owners and managers have demonstrated industry leadership and a commitment to excellence in energy performance with 184 buildings participating from 30 organizations representing over 2.7 million square meters of commercial building space in the second year of the program. This is equivalent to 9.5% of the eligible building area within Edmonton. You will find program details, award winners and building showcases in the 2nd edition of Edmonton's Building Energy Benchmark Report.
