Many of us have replaced our old incandescent light bulbs with new LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs in our homes. Now imagine that across the city...but on our streets! The City of Edmonton has been replacing streetlights with LEDs since 2011 when technological improvements made LEDs the bulb of choice when it comes to roadway lighting. You may have noticed some of the spiffy new lights in communities that have undergone neighbourhood improvements. The new lights seem brighter and whiter, but the bulbs provide the same amount light while actually reduce energy consumption by 40 to 60% per street light. And like our LED bulbs at home, they last much longer than previous types of bulbs.
LED fixtures are also better able to focus the light downward and where needed, making them dark sky friendly. Good for nocturnal creatures and good for energy savings. Now that’s a bright idea!
