Practicality and ingenuity have hit the road...or rather, the bike path. With the new downtown bike network in place, watering the planters that line the route became a logistical problem. The regular water trucks wouldn’t be able to access the planters. But inspiration struck when Travis Kennedy, Acting Director of Parks Operations - NW District, ran into the owner of a local coffee shop that used an electric bike to deliver coffee.
The result? A custom designed solar-powered tricycle with a water tank. The 70 litre tank is outfitted with a solar-powered electric pump that pushes water through an attached hose. The return on investment for the bikes is less that two years. The return on investment for the environment? Even better.
