* Update: Check out our 2019 survey results! *
We recently asked Edmontonians about their perceptions and attitudes towards climate change and found that consistent with the previous year, more than 7 in 10 residents are concerned about climate change and agree on the need to take action now.
This is the second year that we conducted the Climate Change & Energy Perceptions Survey with the help of an accredited professional research company and using a general population online panel. Check out the full survey report provided by Corporate Research Associates. The data itself can be found on the City's Open Data Portal.
Similar to last year, results indicate that in Edmonton there is support and willingness for taking action on climate change. Here are some key findings:
73% of Edmontonians are concerned about climate change and 72% agree on the need to take action now.

67% agree that climate change is caused mostly by human activities.

62% are personally taking action to prevent climate change and 65% want to do more.

43% indicated becoming more supportive of taking action on climate change in the last year. Some of the reasons for being more supportive included that climate change is more evident in the form of extreme weather events and Edmontonians are more mindful of the impact of their actions on the environment.

43% agree that the City of Edmonton should be doing more to prevent climate change.

43% agree that the City of Edmonton is taking the right actions to address climate change.

The majority agrees that investing in energy efficiency (69%) and transitioning to renewable energy sources (66%) provides job opportunities for Edmonton.

One encouraging finding of this year’s survey is a reduction in the gap between how concerned individual Edmontonians are about climate change (73%) and how concerned they believe other Edmonton residents are as a whole (47%). Although the gap is still substantial, it was reduced by 8% from 2017 when only 39% believed other Edmontonians were concerned.
This gap between individual and collective perception, is one of the reasons it’s so important for those of us who are concerned and are taking action to be more vocal. Sharing our concerns and our actions can inspire others. Collectively we can have a positive impact and protect the wonderful quality of life we enjoy in Edmonton.
