Are you planning a renovation? Do you want to make your home more environmentally friendly while improving your comfort? The City of Edmonton’s Home Energy Retrofit Accelerator (HERA) program is here to help. Through this program, you can learn more about your home’s energy use through an EnerGuide home evaluation, and work with contractors to plan your home energy-efficiency journey.
HERA also provides rebates on various renovations: insulation, windows, water, space heating, and more. If you make three or more energy efficiency upgrades to your home you can get a bonus of 20% back on your rebates, and if you pursue a Net Zero home you can receive an additional $10,000 rebate for your efforts!
Below is an example of how HERA rebates work for a household that is looking to do three energy efficiency upgrades as recommended by its EnerGuide evaluation. Since there are three upgrades this household will also receive a bonus rebate.
Recommended upgrades:
- 860 square feet of attic insulation upgraded to R-60
- 12 windows upgraded to be triple pane and ENERGY STAR certified
- Water heater upgraded to an ENERGY STAR certified tankless model
Upgrade | Rebate Calculations |
Insulation | 860 sf * $0.66/ sf = $567.60 |
Windows | 12 windows * $50/window = $600 |
Water Heater | $415 |
Bonus (three upgrades) | 20% * ($415 +$600 +$567.60) = $316.52 |
Total | $1,899.12 |
Total renovation cost: $14,400.00
Percent of total cost covered by rebates: 13%
Estimated annual greenhouse gas savings: 1.08 tCO2e
- Equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from:
- 461 litres of gasoline consumed
- charging 131,374 smartphones
- Equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 17.9 tree seedlings grown for 10 years
